Snow In Portland 12-29-2009

When this picture was taken, the weather forecasters were still saying that there would only be light flurries of snow in Portland today. Within a couple of hours, there were a few inches of snow on the ground, just in time for everyone to head for home in the afternoon. Some people didn’t make it [...]

The Benson Bubblers

Simon Benson moved to Portland in 1880 and, after a couple of failures, became successful in the logging business. His interests later turned elsewhere, where he is best known as the man who started the Benson Hotel and the Multnomah Falls Lodge, as well as for his philanthropy throughout the Northwest. Simon Benson was a [...]

M/V Coho Anniversary

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the M/V Coho. The ferry is owned by Black Ball Ferries, and since the 1970′s has been the sole auto ferry on the route connecting Port Angeles to Victoria. The route saves many driving miles and serves as a boost to tourism on both sides of the border. See [...]

Down the Clackamas River

I was thinking this week how only a few short months ago we could step outside in short-sleeves. In the autumn, it would have been comfortable to meander down the Clackamas River watching the water flow by. All is peaceful as the sun gets ready to set for the night. The Steel Bridge

The Steel Bridge in Portland remains my favorite bridge across the Willamette River. Built in 1912, it remains today very busy with automobile traffic. In addition, it is a major railroad link for trains heading north and south along the Pacific Coast, and is also the bridge used by the Tri-Met light rail system. MAX [...]

Start of a New Day

After a long night of Winter darkness, it is always nice to see the first flickers of daylight coming over the hill on a cold morning. Here, the sun peeks over the Cascade Mountains, about to get in the eyes of commuters starting their day in Northeast Portland. Photo: Taken on NE Lombard St in [...]

The 75-foot-tall tree was brought in just before Thanksgiving and has been decorated with white lights in recent years. Photo: Taken at Pioneer Courthouse Square at SW 6th Avenue & [...]

Pioneer Courthouse at Night

The Pioneer Courthouse in Downtown Portland has been standing in the same spot since construction began in 1869. It has been a focal point of the area and renovated and preserved many times. Currently, it faces Pioneer Courthouse Square, a meeting place for everyone often referred to as “Portland’s Living Room”.  It is illuminated at [...]

Even the Train is Festive

It is not too difficult to find festive lights all over the place this time of year. Kind of interesting that the new, well-lit MAX trains seem to fit right in with the other lights. The lights of Downtown Portland make it almost like daytime, even after dark.  Photo: Taken at SW Broadway & Yamhill [...]

Ducks In a Row

The ducks seem oblivious to the sub-freezing temperatures on a recent sunny day in Portland.   A few green shoots decorate the winter landscape giving a hope of the spring to come in a few months.  In the meantime, it’s good that birds are cold-blooded.  Photo: Taken in Westmoreland Park in Portland on 9 December [...]
