Atop Rocky Butte in Portland stands a beacon light on a tower. Since Portland International Airport is nearby, the light is a sentinel against flying machines hitting the side of the hill. But once upon a time, vandals climbed the tower and painted the Batman logo on the lens of the light — thus the Bat Signal. Not cool, of course. But in a way, cool.
