The Beach at Dungeness Spit

Sometimes the simple is pleasing, even as it can be complex at the same time. It’s just the beach, as seen at the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge near Sequim on the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

For those needing a bit more excitement, a short video:

Heading to the Beach

091311 Port Angeles 239 1024x768 Heading to the Beach

Sometimes it takes a bit of work to get to a secluded part of the beach. This stretch is about a mile down a steep trail in the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge near Sequim. There’s nothing like the waves crashing on the beach, watching the birds go by, and dreaming of the sea along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We couldn’t see across the strait to Victoria that day — too much fog. The (up close) Olympic Mountains start in the background. The cliffs: Higher than they look. The Tide is Out

091311 Port Angeles 111 1024x768 The Tide is Out

The most obvious thing that I can say about this scene from the bay in Kingston, Washington is that the tide is out. It’s very out. The private boat dock with the boat next to it is about 200 feet from the edge of the water, with only the muddy ground in between. The seagulls don’t seem to mind, though.

Yes, it is a long way out. Photos: Taken near the Port of Kingston Marina in Kingston on 13 September 2011.

When We Win the Lottery

091311 Port Angeles 087 1024x768 When We Win the Lottery

Kathy says that we will want to live here when we win the lottery. The set of condominiums are overlooking the Port of Edmonds Marina, and seem to be pretty nice. The view from out the windows (or from the parking lot, the only way that I can attest) is a wide, swooping view of Puget Sound and a spectacular view of the Olympic Mountains. Especially on a clear day. The ships go past from Admiralty Inlet to Puget Sound, with the Kitsap Peninsula in the background. Alas, all I got was this picture of the condos. One Tough Seagull

Sometimes, you just know when an animal is claiming it’s home territory. And something about the look of this seagull (Larus occidentalis) tells me that I shouldn’t mess with his home. Actually, I kind of like his furniture, at least in the setting of his particular beach. Photo: Taken on Ediz Hook near Port Angeles on 13 September 2011.

One Tough Chicken

091311 Port Angeles 052 1024x768 One Tough Chicken

Apparently, I don’t seem to have as many pictures on birds and other wildlife in nature as certain other blogs do. So, to remedy that, today I present the Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus). This particular subspecies of Gallus gallus domesticus is about 15 feet tall and was found near the Country Village along Bothell-Everett Highway in Bothell. I would suspect that this specimen would take a long time to cook, and would come out tough anyway. C’est la vie. Photo: Taken in Bothell on 6 September 2011.

A Foggy Seattle Day

I don’t know whether or not there were cat’s feet involved, but fog is a frequent condition in Seattle. Here, the Space Needle and nearby buildings are seen through the haze from a vantage point in West Seattle. That’s the ferry M/V Chelan in Elliott Bay, making it’s way on a scheduled trip from Downtown Seattle to Bremerton. Photo: Taken at Hamilton Park Viewpoint in West Seattle on 3 December 2011.

Nothing But Masts

Edmonds Storm 111111 014 1024x768 Nothing But Masts

It’s all how you look at it.  It might be nothing more than a parking lot for sailboats. Or. perhaps, it’s all about the arrangement of the boats. One way or another, that there is a whole lot of sailboat masts. I think that “symmetry” is the word you are looking for. Photo: Taken at Elliott Bay Marina in Seattle on 27 September 2011.

Late Summer in Magnolia

Edmonds Storm 111111 008 1024x768 Late Summer in Magnolia

It really wasn’t that long ago that we were enjoying sunny days that were a bit warmer than they are now. There’s always time to take a seat on the lawn and look out over Elliott Bay and just relax. The homes are near the Magnolia neighborhood in Seattle, near the Elliott Bay Marina. (Or, could it be Italy??) Now, is it Springtime yet? Watching a Winter Storm

Edmonds Storm 111111 052 1024x768 Watching a Winter Storm

It was a dark and stormy night, as the sun was setting over an autumn day.  On this day, people were coming out to see the first big storm of the season, with its ominous looking clouds, coupled with an unusually high tide that sent the waves over the walls and railings into the walkways.  That, and we found some permanent visitors already there to look at the sight.  Photo:  Taken at Olympic Beach in Edmonds on 11 November 2011.
