Boys basketball district preview

Breaking down the three district tournaments

By Hailey Palmer Staff Reporter

The postseason is here for every basketball team in Whatcom County. Every team qualified for their district tournament because of teams playing unbalanced schedules this season.

That means there’s plenty of action this week across the 1A, 2A and 3A classifications.

Breakdowns by classification are below.

Class 1A

The boys 1A tournament is structured the same as the girls 1A tournament.

Mount Baker is the fifth seed and will play No. 4 Meridian Tuesday at Blaine High School. The winner will play No. 3 Nooksack Valley Thursday at Meridian High School while the loser is out.

Top-seeded Lynden Christian will play No. 2 Blaine Friday in the championship game at Nooksack Valley High School. The winner advances to the District 1/2 crossover while the loser has another shot to earn a trip in a loser-out contest.

Class 2A

Lynden secured the top seed in the 2A tournament and won’t play until Friday. The Lions will play the winner of No. 9 Bellingham at No. 8 Squalicum. The loser between the Bayhawks and Storm is out.

Sehome also won’t play until Friday as the No. 2 seed in the tournament. The Mariners will play the winner of No. 7 Cedarcrest and No. 10 Sedro-Woolley.

The semifinal and championship games Feb. 14 and Feb. 18 will be held at Mount Vernon High School. Consolation games Feb. 16 and Feb. 18 will also be held there.

The top three teams advance to regionals.

Class 3A

Ferndale is the No. 7 seed in the 3A tournament and will open play Tuesday at No. 2 Shorecrest. It’s a rematch of the first game of the season, which the Golden Eagles lost 82-58.

A win puts Ferndale in the quarterfinals Saturday, Feb. 12. A loss puts them at home Thursday, Feb. 10 with an opponent that’s to be determined.

The semifinals and loser’s bracket games are scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 16. The championship game will be Saturday, Feb. 19, at Everett Community College.

The top four teams out of the tournament move on to regionals.
