One overdose death reported at Civic Field winter shelter Monday

Shelter opened Dec. 1 for the season

By Charlotte Alden General Assignment/Enterprise Reporter

One person died after overdosing at the Civic Field winter shelter early Monday morning, Dec. 4.

First responders were called to two separate overdoses — the first at 2:48 a.m. involved a woman who Road2Home staff were able to revive with naloxone inside the shelter, according to Bellingham Police Public Information Officer Megan Peters.

Peters said shelter staff reported the woman did not want to be seen by medics and Fire Department personnel left the scene.

The second overdose occurred at 3:36 a.m. Peters said when first responders arrived, the man had been given naloxone but was still unconscious, and first responders were not able to revive him.

The winter shelter, which opened on Dec. 1, is located in the locker rooms at Civic Field under the scoreboard. It’s run by nonprofit Road2Home and funded by the City of Bellingham and Whatcom County. The shelter will be open every night from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. until Feb. 29 and serves guests on a first-come, first-serve basis.
