What’s the Deal With: Ax throwing?

New indoor sport a date night favorite

By Ralph Schwartz Staff Reporter

If karaoke and trivia night are getting old, you might try changing up your night life at Bellingham Axe, a more recent addition to Bellingham’s bar scene.

Ax throwing, strictly speaking, is bar-adjacent. A small bar with a music stage can be found upstairs, but state law forbids alcohol on the same floor where patrons are throwing sharp objects at wooden targets.

This might help explain why no one at Bellingham Axe has chopped their ear off mid-throw. Except for some “little nicks on fingers,” employee Forest Gheen-Regouski said, Bellingham Axe at 1414 Cornwall Ave. has been injury-free since it opened in 2019.

Ax throwing is safer and easier than you might think. Within an hour, this reporter went from handling an ax once before in his life (an uncle put me to work chopping wood) to sinking two bull’s-eyes in one match. (Patrons have the option of flinging smaller tomahawks and knives, too.)

The primitive appeal of this indoor sport — a mix of bowling and darts, but different — launched it to a Bellingham Alive! Reader’s Choice Award for best date night in 2021.

Throw for an hour at Bellingham Axe for $22 per person. Online reservations are recommended on weekends.

WTD runs on Wednesdays. Have a suggestion for a “What’s the Deal With?” inquiry? Email us at newstips@cascadiadaily.com.
