Brian Young, a current educator and now former assistant coach at Squalicum High School, has been hired as the new head coach of the Sehome football program, according to a Jan. 27 letter sent to players and families by Colin Cushman, Sehome’s activity and athletics coordinator.
“Brian brings a wealth of football knowledge, teaching and coaching experience, and a true passion for kids,” the letter stated. “Brian did an amazing job presenting his vision in his interview, and we are all excited to have him lead our football team.”
Young has been an assistant coach with Squalicum’s program for “multiple years” and most recently served as the Storm’s defensive coordinator during the 2022-23 season. In 2021, he received the Washington State Football Coaches Association District 1 Assistant Coach of the Year award.
“I’m going to create an environment where it’s safe,” Young said when addressing Sehome players and parents for the first time in the school’s gym on Jan. 31. “I’m going to create an environment, right, where you walk around and be proud to be a part of this because you know you made a difference.”
He continues to teach family and consumer sciences at Squalicum.
Prior to coaching at Squalicum, Young coached the Bellingham Bulldogs — a semi-pro football team that folded in 2017.
The letter noted that parents Josh Turrell and Derek Watson assisted in the interviewing process, as well as players Nolan Wright and Coleby Chambers.
“The one thing that is not optional: We have to create a culture of success,” Young added. “A player-led team is way better than a coach-directed team … You’re going to keep each other accountable.”
Sehome has been searching for a new head coach since former coach Kevin Beason resigned following a Bellingham Public Schools investigation into hazing incidents within the team.
