Terrell Creek in Birch Bay has been worrisome to the locals who are concerned about its smell and the green algae floating to its surface.
Whatcom County Public Works has received multiple inquiries about Terrell Creek — which connects Lake Terrell to Birch Bay — having a foul smell and the water looking a concerning color.
However, the conditions are completely ordinary for the seasonal lack of rain in the summer, according to public works.
Natural conditions generate strong sulfur smells, surface films and unusual colors in the creek. Once more of the fall rain hits the water, the smell and look of the water will start to return to a normal state.
Until then, it is recommended that children and pets stay away from the creek.
The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association began helping restore the watershed by removing fish passage barriers for salmon in the late ’90s. Terrell Creek received further restoration efforts in 2020 when 200 pieces of large woody debris were placed in it to aid salmon habitat.
