Western women’s golf was in striking distance throughout but couldn’t catch up to the University of British Columbia Okanagan as the Vikings placed second in the annual WWU Invitational Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
The Vikings ended two strokes back of the Heat in the seven-team, two-day tourney, despite tying for the lowest team score on Tuesday with a 13-over-par 301.
Senior Dani Bailey led the Vikings by tying for third in the 37-player field with a 3-over-par 147. She tallied 23 pars and five birdies over the two rounds.
Sophomore Laren Lee and Emma Worgum each tied for eighth place with a 6-over-par 150, while sophomore Kasey Maralack took 14th with a 10-over-par 154, and senior Claire Moon tied for 21st with a 13-over-par 157.
Luke Bennett, Western’s director of golf, said in a news release that the entire team put up impressive numbers considering rough conditions.
“I felt like we got off to a good start to the fall season a few weeks ago and the team carried that into the last two days in our home tournament,” Bennett said. “I am extremely proud of the effort, the results and the grit they showed, and looking forward to a strong finish to the fall schedule in a few weeks in Hawaii.”
Western next plays in the Hawaii Pacific University Sharks Shootout Oct. 23–24 at the Waikoloa Beach Golf Resort on Hawaii’s Big Island, then at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate at Waikoloa Village Golf Course Oct. 27–28.
