Meridian’s five-run second inning fueled a 5-1 win for the Trojans over Nooksack Valley in Northwest Conference play on Tuesday, April 2 at Nooksack Valley High School.

Senior Tyson Timmer jumpstarted the scoring for Meridian (6-3, 3-3 NWC) on a two-run double to center field, scoring junior Jonah Aase and fellow senior Silas Berschauer.

The Trojans rattled off another three runs in the frame before freshman Nate Payne went to work on the mound — holding NV (5-5, 3-3 NWC) scoreless for five innings.

Payne pitched all seven innings for Meridian, allowing three hits, no runs or walks, while striking out seven batters. Freshman Landon Rowley led the Trojans at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 batting with an RBI.

NV had a two-game win streak snapped with the loss. Sophomore Matthew Blake drove in the Pioneers’ only run, finishing 1 for 2 at the plate with an RBI.

Next up for Meridian is a road game at Brewster at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 4. NV won’t play again until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9 when it hosts Ferndale.
