Western Washington University junior guard Kai Johnson, the No. 12 leading scorer in NCAA Division II men’s basketball last season (21.6 points per game), has transferred to the University of Montana.
Johnson, who announced his commitment to Montana via social media on Monday, April 8, will have one year of eligibility remaining. His scoring output during the 2023–24 season ranked third-best all-time among Western players.
Johnson also made ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 plays of the day on Feb. 3 when he finished a one-handed dunk against Western Oregon after passing the ball to himself off the backboard.
In addition to his scoring, Johnson averaged 4.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals while starting all 29 games. He shot an impressive 52.2% from the field and 41.6% from 3-point range while converting 75.7% of his free throw attempts.
Western finished 17-12 overall (9-9 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) and missed the postseason for the second straight year.
