Community Boating Center’s new inclusive Wheelhouse Building gets finishing touches

The building has fully accessible restrooms, showers, and community facilities

Bellingham’s Community Boating Center announced the completion of its new Wheelhouse Building, aimed at enhancing accessibility and inclusivity in recreational boating.

The building will provide fully accessible, heated spaces with restrooms and showers, along with classroom and community facilities to support its programs according to a Saturday, April 27 news release.

The boating center, which was founded in 2006, is a nonprofit located on Bellingham Bay near Fairhaven. The center works with local groups and nonprofits to provide inclusive recreational
boating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.

The project broke ground in fall 2023 and is the first phase of the center’s expansion plans.

“With plans to incorporate adaptive boats and equipment and electric safety boats, the [Community Boating Center] is committed to further enhancing its ability to better serve all community members,” the boating center stated in the news release.

Phase two will coincide with the Port of Bellingham’s small watercraft dock next to the center’s campus, which will be the first accessible dock north of Everett, according to the news release.

The boating center is celebrating by hosting its first annual Seize the Bay event June 23, where attendees can try out the boats and engage in water activities. There will be a food truck and beer garden on-site as well.
