It’s the end of an era for Bellingham’s nightlife scene: The Underground, one of the city’s few nightclubs, will permanently close Sunday, Aug. 25. The announcement came via the venue’s social media Thursday, Aug. 22, though no cause was stated.
The Underground opened in 2011 and regularly hosted DJs, musicians and other live performers. It will celebrate its final weekend in business with “one last hurrah”: karaoke on Friday, Aug. 23 and Latin Night with DJ Note on Saturday, Aug. 24.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful customers for the last 13 years,” stated the Instagram closing announcement. “Many of you have become like family to us and it has been our pleasure to be able to be a part of so many fun times with you.”
The 6,500-square-foot venue had a 550-person capacity and was also available as an event rental. It was previously home to The Nightlight Lounge, a music venue that hosted nationally touring acts including Ghostface Killah.
Motives for the closure are still unknown. As of Aug. 23, its website still advertises performances through Oct. 26.
