Prep boys basketball preview: Lummi Nation’s Jerome Toby

Junior guard hopes to lead the Blackhawks to a state title this season

By Nick Zeller-Singh Sports Reporter

Lummi Nation’s Jerome Toby returns for the Blackhawks as a junior point guard. Toby, who is a quick and clever guard, began playing basketball to follow his family’s footsteps, starting at 5 years old.

“I have been around the school, practices and games my whole life,” Toby said. “Playing here for my dad is something I love a lot, too.”

Toby’s father, also named Jerome Toby, is the head coach for the Blackhawks. The father and son duo led the team to a 21-4 record last year and reached the 1B state quarterfinals.

“Our team chemistry last year was really good,” Toby said. “We were successful last year but want to do even better. We want to win state.”

Toby believes Lummi Nation can repeat its success if the team works together, remains patient and lifts weights to build muscle. Although the expectations could be set high for the Blackhawks, Toby knows he and his teammates will get a ton of support from the Lummi community.

“It’s exciting to play with my teammates in high school because we always wanted this with all the fans here watching us,” Toby said. The fans are really tight-knit and supporting. If anything goes wrong, anyone in the community is here to support you.”

Toby still has to finish his junior and senior seasons before heading to college, but hopes to play at the next level.
