Prep girls basketball preview: Bellingham’s Mary Lockhart

Lockhart hopes to lead the Bayhawks to a winning season

By Nick Zeller-Singh Sports Reporter

Bellingham’s Mary Lockhart is returning for her junior season as a post player for the Bayhawks. The two-time Northwest Conference basketball honorable mention and one-time volleyball honorable mention will be looking to rebuild the Bayhawks basketball team after a 3-17 season last year.

“I am looking forward to this season with our new coach and getting some wins,” Lockhart said. “We just need to play hard and trust each other because we have a lot of good athletes.”

Lockhart began playing basketball at the Boys & Girls Club in first grade because her parents were basketball players as well.

“I have always been an athlete and found my identity,” Lockhart said. “I love the competitiveness and team atmosphere.”

Lockhart has been on the varsity basketball team since freshman year. Since she first laced her shoes with the Bayhawks, she has become a leader on the team, including being named a captain both last and this season.

She enjoys being a leader for her squad because, “It has helped me find my voice. I was a quiet kid in elementary and middle school, then started to be more outgoing and have more friends.”

Lockhart has been a standout post player in the NWC because of her familiarity with both volleyball and basketball. The two sports have helped her with strength, lateral movement, agility and speed.

Although Lockhart still has another year at Bellingham High, she hopes to play volleyball in college.
