Blaine pins its way past Nooksack Valley in boys wrestling dual

Blaine pins 12 of Nooksack Valley's 14 wrestlers

Blaine boys wrestling won 12 out of 14 matches — all by pinfall in the second round or earlier — to take a 72-9 victory over Nooksack Valley Wednesday, Dec. 18 at Blaine High.

The Borderites and Pioneers began the dual at 175 pounds. Blaine’s Thomas Cox picked up a couple of takedowns in the first period against Pioneer’s Owyn Cunningham. In the second period, Cox threw Cunningham onto his back and pinned him for a 6-0 team lead.

Nooksack Valley’s Wyatt Bacon came into the 190-pound match as the second-ranked wrestler in the state. Blaine’s Rhys Milligan made it a tough match, but Bacon came out on top with a 7-1 decision.

At 215 pounds, Blaine’s Zi Yu threw Nooksack Valley’s Kristopher Garcia Martinez onto his back for a pin. Borderites’ Otto Shelton also pinned Pioneers’ Gabe Snyders in the first period at 285 pounds.

Blaine’s Trent Crabtree and Jerome Baas Jr. won at 106 and 113 pounds by forfeit to extend Blaine’s team lead 30-3. At 120 pounds, Blaine’s Cole Voigt picked up a 13-0 lead before pinning Nooksack Valley’s Vincent Colborn in the second period.

Blaine’s Sam Saia also won by forfeit at 126 pounds. Borderites’ Aidan Hancock pinned Pioneers’ Tresean Butler at 132 pounds, and Blaine’s Cooper Smith pinned Pioneers’ Jaden Jones in the first period at 138 pounds.

Blaine’s Daniel Johner pinned Nooksack Valley’s Christian Johnson-Pritchett at 144 pounds; Blaine’s Jaiden Constance pinned Nooksack Valley’s Austin Martin at 150 pounds; Blaine’s Nik Morrow pinned Nooksack Valley’s Abraham Hernandez at 157 pounds; and Blaine’s Hugo Vekved pinned Nooksack Valley’s Patric Galliher at 165 pounds.

Blaine is off until a Jan. 4, 2025 tournament at Sultan High School. Nooksack Valley returns to action when it hosts Mount Baker on Jan. 15, 2025.
