JESSE’S PICKS

Music Mondays: Sharp 5
3:30–5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, FireHouse Arts and Events Center, 1314 Harris Ave.

Every once in a while I’ll see people say that they would love to go see more live music if only it started earlier. For anyone like that who may be reading, I want to make sure you’re aware that the FireHouse in Fairhaven does live music most Mondays starting at 3:30, typically small acoustic ensembles or solo acts, but drawing on some of the best jazz, folk and classical acts in town. This week’s edition is an extra good one, with hard bop from the Sharp 5 quintet on Monday, Jan. 6.

The Hobby
8–11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, Make.Shift, 306 Flora St.

Friday, Jan. 10 at Make.Shift features The Hobby, one of my favorite local punk-ish bands, even if they do keep promising a new album and never delivering. The bill also features the duo Duos with their gleefully anarchic blend of punk, prog and metal, and the more straight-ahead political pop-punk of Seattle’s Kids on Fire

Steeplechase January Residency
7–9 p.m. every Saturday in January, Honey Moon, 1053 N. State St.

Steeplechase are a new-ish Celtic group featuring three of our best locals (David Pender Lofgren on bodhran, Sam Vogt on guitar and Zach Bauman on bouzouki) plus the excellent Skagit County-based flute player Hanz Araki. They’re doing a residency at the Honey Moon this month, playing every Saturday night, so if you miss them this week you’ve got a few more chances, but why take that risk?

A Night of Rock ‘n’ Roll for Owen’s Foundation
6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, Lincoln Theatre, 712 S. 1st St.

Owen Morton was a 14-year-old who tragically passed away last year in a motocross accident. His family have created a foundation in his honor and they’re hosting a fundraiser at the Lincoln Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 11 featuring a bunch of Skagit County’s best rock bands, including Fanny Alger, The Dimes and Friends for the Ghost. Proceeds benefit a variety of good causes including music education and motorcycle safety.
