An 11-year-old from Glenhaven in south Whatcom County is in intensive care in Seattle after a shooting in their home, according to the sheriff’s office.

A 13-year-old from the home called 911 around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, to say they had shot their 11-year-old sibling with a handgun. The children were alone at the time, and deputies were told the shooting was accidental, according to a sheriff’s news release.

The victim was taken to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center before being transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the incident.

The two children attend schools in the Mount Baker School District. The district has made additional counseling and staff support available at all of its schools, according to the sheriff’s office.
