LYNDEN — Davis Fogle scored a game-high 43 points, including 31 in the second half, and Anacortes handed previously unbeaten Lynden Christian its first loss of the season, 78-66, on Saturday, Jan. 13 at Lynden Christian High School.
LC (13-1, 7-1 NWC) had its 25-game win streak snapped by the Seahawks, dating back to Jan. 24, 2023. Anacortes (11-3, 7-2 NWC) has won five in a row since Jan. 4.
“We just didn’t really have an answer for [Fogle],” LC head coach Tim Zylstra said. “We doubled him the whole second half … It felt like everything he was putting up he was making in [the] end of the third and fourth quarter.”
Fogle, who finished with 12 points in the first half, erupted for 17 in the third quarter — pouring in all but six of the Seahawks’ points in that period. He finished with five 3-pointers in the game.
The scoring effort by the 6-foot-6 junior guard flipped LC’s five-point halftime lead into a 53-49 advantage for Anacortes heading into the final quarter. LC was never able to retake the edge in the fourth quarter.
“I like it when the pressure’s high; I love that,” Fogle said. “I was kind of just trying to get in that zone, and just do whatever I could to help my team win.”
LC had four players score in double digits in the loss, led by senior guard Dawson Bouma’s 20 points and junior Gannon Dykstra’s 16.
Bouma and Dykstra were at their best in the first half, concluding the first quarter with a 19-19 tie before outscoring the Seahawks 16-11 in the second period. Fogle struggled to find a rhythm in the first two quarters, as the Lyncs were effective in containing him.
Senior forward Kayden Stuit punctuated a 35-30 lead for LC heading into halftime with an uncontested two-handed dunk just before the buzzer.
It wasn’t until late in the third quarter that LC began to lose control and contain of Fogle.
With just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter, Anacortes took its first lead since midway through the opening period when Fogle drained a 3-pointer to give the Seahawks a 50-47 advantage. An ensuing 6-0 run by Anacortes made it 57-49 early in the fourth.
“I think we just, our whole thing, we were just staying together as a family,” Fogle said. “That’s kind of been everything we’ve been preaching, just family, family and all these days of practice have just been defensive-minded.”
LC pulled within three points multiple times over the next few minutes, but Fogle would always answer back to push the game just out of reach for the Lyncs.
“We got some shots in the fourth [quarter], and ours didn’t go in,” Zylstra said. “Then on defense, when they did miss, we were a little scattered because we had to have two guys on one guy [Fogle].”
Anacortes’ 12-point lead at the end of the game was its largest of the contest.
“Going forward, it doesn’t change anything as far as our goals. Our goal isn’t to go undefeated, that’s for sure,” Zylstra added. “It’s more about, you know, can we learn from this? And if we have to face this going forward, how to handle it.”
Senior forward Jeremiah Wright added 13 points for LC, while Stuit finished with 12. Sophomore post Micah Dickison contributed 11 points for Anacortes as the Seahawks’ only other player in double digits.
The game was the only time LC (Class 1A) and Anacortes (2A) will meet this season, as they compete in different classifications, and won’t see one another in the postseason.
Next up for LC is a home game versus Oak Harbor at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15. Anacortes hosts Sehome (8-6, 5-4 NWC) at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
