Sehome, Squalicum lead locals at NWC Invitational meet

Whatcom County swim teams combine for 17 top-3 finishes in regular season's biggest meet

Sehome and Squalicum boys swim placed second and third, respectively, at the Northwest Conference Invitational swim meet on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes.

Anacortes, the meet’s host, captured first place out of 10 teams in attendance with its 375 team score, six first-place event finishes and 15 top-3 placements. 

Sehome (292 team points) posted one top finish and combined for eight top-3 placements. Squalicum (224) had fewer swimmers compete than Anacortes and Sehome, but the Storm notched a trio of top finishes and finished top three in eight events.

Senior Jack Legan was Sehome’s lone top finisher in the one-meter dive, posting a score of 190.60. Sehome senior Scotty Li also took second in the 500-yard freestyle with his time of 6:03.12.

The Mariners’ relay teams excelled, as their top 200-yard medley (second, 1:56.19), 200-yard freestyle (second, 1:43.54) and 400-yard freestyle (third, 3:58.48) teams all finished in the top three.

Squalicum’s individual finishers were led by sophomore Dylan Fisk, who took first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.71 seconds) and 100-yard butterfly (55.37 seconds) events. The Storm’s 200-yard medley relay team also won the event with a time of 1:51.24.

Sophomore Hayden Nelson also captured second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.15 seconds) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.46) for the Storm.

Ferndale, which finished fifth with 88 team points, was fueled by sophomore Luke Mitchell’s third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. 

Bellingham had four fourth-place finishes, with sophomore Gunner Drost-Kubitz (100- and 200-yard freestyles) making up two of them. The Bayhawks finished sixth with 79 team points.

Lynden (eighth, 54 team points) was led by junior Eugenio Sotomayor, who captured fourth in the 200-yard individual medley and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle.
