Weeks after record cold in the Bellingham area, the airport recorded the warmest January day on record, according to the National Weather Service’s Seattle office.
In a X post Monday night, Jan. 29, the NWS said the temperature in Bellingham was 52 degrees at 5 p.m. and the winds were northeast. At 7 p.m., the winds changed to a southerly flow and the temperature was recorded at 68 degrees at Bellingham International Airport, the warmest temperature on record in January, the post stated.
It’s been a month of record weather.
Starting Jan. 10, the area experienced record cold with some temperatures dropping to 9 degrees. A week later on Jan. 17, the area endured a record snowfall that resulted in multi-day closures of city services, schools and businesses.
Minor flooding has occurred in the Ferndale area tied to warming temperatures.
Looking ahead, the forecast calls for another warm day Tuesday with a high of 60 and then more rain and temperatures dropping into the 40s by the end of the week.
