During white-out conditions and light rain, multiple rescue agencies evacuated a man injured while hiking on Monday evening, July 22 near Mazama Lake.

First responders were notified around 5 p.m. that a 50-year-old man had slipped and broken his leg while hiking on the backside of the Chain Lake Loops, Jason Martin, a volunteer member of Bellingham Mountain Rescue, said over the phone.

Glacier Fire and Rescue was first on the scene and was able to hike out to the man via the Table Mountain south side trail, Martin said. First responders splinted the man’s leg and evacuated the man out.

Bellingham Mountain Rescue Council and Summit to Sound arrived after 7 p.m. and approached the Glacier Fire and Rescue evacuation team, Martin said. The man was placed in a litter and the teams brought him to the parking lot of Mt. Baker Ski Area, arriving around 9:30 p.m.

The man was taken for treatment in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Martin called the rescue “clean” and was thankful for the cooperation of the three agencies.
