Port to receive 50% less in fees from Trackside Beer Garden in June

The Port of Bellingham Commission unanimously approved compensation for costs related to replacing the grass around Kulshan Brewing’s Trackside Beer Garden on Tuesday, June 4, after the grass was torn up because of lead paint contamination.

The Port will receive 50% less in concession fees from Kulshan during June, according to the agreement. Additionally, Kulshan will reduce its payments to the Port by nearly $6,000 for the month.

The $5,978 figure was compiled by adding the Kulshan staffs’ pay, contract labor and Kulshan’s equipment, according to the agreement.

The grass was removed and replaced in early May after lead paint chips from the digester tanks were found in the area. The paint had been removed from the digester tanks in April using a high-power pressure washer while screening hung from the tanks to contain the water and the paint. Plastic sheeting was placed under the digester to collect water and paint.

The port removed and replaced the grass. To allow the grass to re-establish, the area could not be accessed for three weeks. The area was reopened on Saturday, June 1.
