Sehome returns state champion, qualifier to premier programs

Prep sports previews spring 2024

In 2022, Whatcom County athletes tallied 24 state titles during the spring season alone. Last season they earned 25. Could 26 be on the horizon in 2024? Spring sports mark the return to the outdoors — often with frequent weather-related hiccups in the early season. Snow flurries, torrential downpours and gray, windy days make “spring” sports challenging. But that’s part of the ride.

As the last remaining member of the team that contributed to last year’s state title, how are you carrying that success into this year?

I am definitely very grateful that I had the opportunity to go to state and get that state championship. I think I’m coming into this season with an open mind — anything can happen — but also integrity, determination and trying to defend that title again.

What would make this a successful season for you?

I think everyone just having fun, working hard, being dedicated to the team — just a positive environment. Some days on the golf course, you get in your head. So just staying strong and just coming out, showing up every day.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I’m a lefty. I have a family of six, so I have three other siblings. I’m the second oldest of four.

JACK BRADY

Senior, Boys Track and Field, Sprinter/Hurdler

Last year was another incredible year for this team. How does that momentum carry over to this season?

We’ve got a lot of the same coaches and we’ve got a lot of people returning. I think we’re all really excited and happy. The vibes are good.

Do you expect your role to change this season? How so?

I’m running the same events — I think I’ll just kind of look for future [Sehome] hurdlers, you know? I want to make it farther in the season this year, I guess. I [made it to state], but I didn’t make it to finals, so I guess that’s kind of my goal, is just to make it to finals and make podium.

What are your main goals for this season?

I really want to just make sure I’m happy with my senior year. I want it to be something I’m proud of when I walk away from it. I really want the team to do well again.
