CONNOR’S PICKS

Fastpitch softball: 2A District 1 championship
6:30 p.m. Friday, May 17, Janicki Fields

Like many other Class 2A tournaments in District 1, the state berth bottleneck brings far higher stakes to this year’s title game.

With only two berths instead of three, just getting to the championship no longer ensures a spot in the state tournament. The loser must win in the consolation final to advance. At least one state-worthy team will be staying home.

It’s another tight race this season. Sedro-Woolley (17-1, 14-0 Northwest Conference) is the clear-cut favorite, having swept the board in league play, but Lynden (15-5, 11-3 NWC), Burlington-Edison (13-6, 12-2 NWC) and Lakewood (12-5, 10-4 NWC) are all contenders.

Sedro-Woolley defeated Lynden, 2-1, in this game last season. However, neither went on to earn a trophy in the 2A state tournament.

Boys soccer: 1A District 1 championship, Meridian vs. Lynden Christian
7 p.m. Saturday, May 11, Blaine High School

Meridian is headed back to the district championship for the second straight season as the reigning champions.

Lynden Christian, however, is not far removed from a title either. The Lyncs defeated Meridian, 3-1, in the 2022 championship game. The stakes are high, as there’s no double-elimination due to the lone state berth.

Meridian bested Blaine a season ago in this match, but the Trojans lost twice to LC in the regular season. This time around, it’s win or go home.

The guides provide instructions on safety and procedures ahead of launching the tour. It’s a three-hour guided tour, which is perfect for beginners.
