Travelers heading up to Lynden for the international plowing match on Saturday, May 18 may want to avoid using Hannegan Road due to expected road delays.
Whatcom County Public Works is warning of extended delays at the East Smith Road and Hannegan Road intersection as utility crews do relocation work ahead of a planned roundabout project. Crews are expected to be on scene starting at 6 a.m. Saturday and will end work around 2 a.m. Sunday, May 19.
Public works recommends finding alternative routes to avoid the extended wait times.
Construction of the roundabout is expected to start Tuesday, May 28 and run through at least August. During construction, traffic will be reduced to a single lane. Starting after the Fourth of July holiday, the intersection will be closed for 25 days with a posted detour.
The intersection will reopen after Aug. 7, before the Northwest Washington Fair is scheduled to begin in Lynden.
In addition to installing the roundabout, there will be an installation of curb-separated pedestrian and bicycling facilities.
