JESSE’S PICKS

Energy Pyramid, Sour Fuzz, Preacher & the Freight Train
8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 30, Wild Buffalo, 208 W. Holly St.

I always love to see the Wild Buffalo giving Thursday nights to local acts. On May 30 they’ve got an excellent triple bill: country/folk duo the Preacher and the Freight Train kick it off, followed by the fuzzy garage rock duo Sour Fuzz and the unpredictable rock instrumentals of Energy Pyramid

Ska Island
8 p.m. Friday, May 31, Aslan Depot, 1322 N. State St.

When I did my requests column a few weeks back, one request I couldn’t find a good answer for was for more local reggae. Well, now I’ve got an answer! There’s a new group called Ska Island with a bunch of well-known players from around the region. They’re making their Bellingham debut on Friday, May 31 at Aslan Depot. From the little bit they have online it seems to tend much more toward the laid back sounds of first wave Jamaican ska, reggae, and rocksteady, not the more frenetic ‘90s ska revival.

Morris Day and the Time
8 p.m. Friday, May 31, Silver Reef Casino, 4876 Haxton Way, Ferndale

Morris Day and the Time came out of the Minneapolis funk scene of the ‘80s, and their show at the Silver Reef Casino on May 31 should be a throwback in all the best ways. Expect sharply pressed suits, keytars, deep grooves and a bunch of great hits.

Year of the Cobra
9 p.m. Saturday, June 1, The Shakedown, 1212 N. State St.

Year of the Cobra are a dark, sludgy metal duo with an unusual guitarless lineup. Amy Tung Barrysmith sings surprisingly melodic vocals over her own massive bass riffs while John Barrysmith smashes the drums behind her. Bring earplugs for sure. They’re at the Shakedown on Saturday, June 1.
