Jesse Stanton's weekly picks and other live shows in Whatcom and Skagit counties

By Jesse Stanton CDN Contributor

JESSE’S PICKS

Hamell On Trial, Stephen Ray Leslie
8 p.m. Wednesday, June  5, The Shakedown, 1212 N. State St.

Hamell on Trial is the stage name of veteran singer-songwriter Ed Hamell, who plays a unique brand of “anti-folk” and has been on the road seemingly forever. In addition to his music, he’s also a storyteller and artist, all of which gets woven into the live experience. He’s at the Shakedown on Wednesday, June 5 with Stephen Ray Leslie.

The Jimmy James Gang
8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 6, Ramble Tamble, 1313 N. State St.

Jimmy James is a superbly funky jazz guitarist out of Seattle who has played with groups like the True Loves and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. He’s bringing a crew of Seattle all-stars under the name The Jimmy James Gang up to Ramble Tamble on Thursday, June 6. That’s a small space for such a well-known act, so get there early.

Girl Parallel, The Cosmic Neighborhood
6 p.m. Friday, June 7, Ritual Records, 115 E. Magnolia St.

This lineup for this month’s First Friday show at Ritual Records is a strong one, featuring the quirky acoustic pop/R&B of Girl Parallel and the Tropicalia-influenced pop of The Cosmic Neighborhood. Free, all-ages shows at a record store are one of the great joys of life as far as I’m concerned, so make this one part of your Art Walk night out.

Brother Ray Benefit
2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, Boundary Bay Brewery, 1107 Railroad Ave.

Every year the Atlantics headline a fundraiser in honor of their departed musical “Brother” Ray Downey to benefit music education programs in Bellingham schools. This year’s edition takes place on the afternoon of Saturday, June  8 in the Boundary Bay beer garden. It also features the Squalicum High School Jazz Band and the Bellingham Youth Jazz Band.
