Kids under 18 can ride for free on Amtrak Cascades trains

Free fares for youth under 18 are the first of their kind in the national system

Train-obsessed children and teens can now ride for free on Amtrak Cascades trains between any of 12 train stations in western Washington.

The announcement, made Tuesday, May 28, by the Washington State Department of Transportation, is the latest step in reducing transit fares for qualifying youth. It’s also the first of its kind in the national Amtrak system.

“We’re hoping to inspire an entire generation to consider trains as a viable choice when traveling along the Interstate-5 corridor,” said Jason Biggs, director of WSDOT’s Rail, Freight, and Ports Division. “It’s a great option for families and people who don’t or can’t drive. Plus, it’s much better for the environment than driving.”

Children under 18 will be able to take advantage of the free transit option, according to WSDOT. However, children under 16 must be accompanied by adults.

For passengers wanting to take advantage of the free fares, tickets must be acquired in advance and are not available onboard the train or at ticket kiosks, according to WSDOT. Free fares are only available on Amtrak Cascades trains and buses, and only for trips beginning and ending in Washington. For trips outside of the state, separate tickets for each leg of the journey must be purchased.

When parents purchase tickets for their children, they can select the proper category and the zero fare tickets will be applied to the purchase. Tickets for adults start at $27.

The program is funded through the Move Ahead Washington transportation package, which has provided $3 billion in funding for public transportation over the next 16 years, as well as the Washington Climate Commitment Act, meant to reduce climate pollution, create jobs and improve public health.
