JESSE’S PICKS
Choir! Choir! Choir!
7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Commercial St.
Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman founded the interactive singing experience known as Choir! Choir! Choir! in Toronto in 2011. They gather crowds of strangers to sing together in one-off events in all sorts of venues, teaching them just enough harmony to make it sound surprisingly intricate. Videos of their performances have a tendency to go viral. For their West Coast tour, making a stop at the Mount Baker Theatre on Wednesday, Oct. 16, they’ve prepared a program called “Hallelujah: Epic Pop Anthems.” Come prepared to sing your heart out, and to be surprised just how good it all sounds.
Rebekah Hood-Sava
7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, Jansen Art Center, 321 Front St., Lynden
Rebekah Hood-Sava is a classically trained cellist who now specializes in making beautiful music from layers of cello loops, reflecting ambient and minimalist influences. Her album “Journey” came out right at the end of last year, and features soaring compositions that showcase all the possibilities of the instrument. She’ll be performing on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Jansen Art Center with a multimedia show incorporating projections of nature films as she plays.
John Van Deusen
7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, The Art Center at Buxton’s, 1904 Commercial Ave., Anacortes
John Van Deusen has been one of the leading lights of the Anacortes scene since his days fronting the indie rock group The Lonely Forest back in the mid-aughts. (I will also never miss a chance to plug his gorgeous Christmas album from 2022, “In the Bleak Midwinter,” although I don’t think he’s playing those songs at this event.) On Saturday, Oct. 19, he’s doing a special performance at Buxton’s to benefit the Anacortes Music Project, with storytelling and Q&A alongside his songs.
Nuages
5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, The Blue Room, 202 E. Holly St., Suites 301–401
Nuages, for many years our leading local proponents of the Manouche jazz style made famous by Django Reinhardt, are unfortunately on some form of long-term hiatus, with some of their members having moved away. However, as promised, they are getting back together for a few shows to celebrate the release of their new and most likely final album. That will be an early evening show on Sunday, Oct. 20 at The Blue Room.
