JESSE’S PICKS

Gallowmaker, Ghost Fetish, Vance Latta
8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, The Shakedown, 1212 N State St.

If you want to get an early start on some spookiness, The Shakedown has a stacked show on Oct. 30. Locals Gallowmaker and Seattle’s Ghost Fetish and Vance Latta all have different takes on Gothic and darkwave genres, but share a common aesthetic with some seriously dark vibes.

Flat Earth Society Orchestra
7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, Lincoln Theatre, 712 S. 1st St., Mount Vernon

The Flat Earth Society Orchestra are a 15-piece group all the way from Belgium incorporating horns, guitar, bass, drums and various other instruments. They might look like a jazz big band at first glance, but while they do incorporate some improvisation, their tunes are much more intricately composed than a typical jazz band. For their show at the Lincoln Theatre on Nov. 1, they’ll be doing a live score for a silent film, Ernst Lubitsch’s “The Oyster Princess” from 1919.

Battle of the Bands
7 p.m. Nov. 1–2 and 8–9, The Blue Room, 202 E. Holly St., Unit 301

I love the idea of a good old Battle of the Bands, but with so many different styles of music out there these days it’s hard to make it work. The Blue Room is working around that with a four-night series, spread out over two weekends, each night focused on a different genre. Nov. 1 is rock, Nov. 2 is hip-hop, Nov. 8 is electronic and Nov. 9 is for punk. Pick your genre, go find a new favorite, and cheer for whoever you want to win. Winners will be based on crowd response and get cash prizes.

Dopapod
9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, Wild Buffalo, 208 W. Holly St.

Dopapod are squarely in the jam band tradition, with long, funky songs designed to help you trance out and find your bliss. They’re musical omnivores who are glad to incorporate other influences from Latin to bluegrass to video game soundtracks. They don’t sing much, but when they do they’re fascinated by palindromes and time travel. If that sounds like fun, transport yourself to the Wild Buffalo on Nov. 2.
