Whatcom County Undersheriff Steve Harris is back on the job after being placed on paid administrative leave in late August.
The announcement comes after an independent investigation about a complaint that was forwarded to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office by county Human Resources was completed, Sheriff Donnell Tanksley said.
“While I cannot disclose the specific results of the investigation to protect the privacy of the individuals involved, I am taking measures to address the concerns expressed,” Tanksley said. “The process furthers our unwavering commitment to ensure compliance with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office policies and build a team that fosters respect and open communication.”
Harris was placed on paid leave on Aug. 30 as the investigation into his conduct was completed. He will return to full duty on Friday, Nov. 1.
The investigation did not include criminal allegations, but the nature of the investigation wasn’t disclosed.
Harris has more than 28 years of experience in the Sheriff’s Office. He was promoted from deputy sheriff in late 2023 to undersheriff before Tanksley took office. When Harris was a detective, he handled major crimes and complex financial crimes. He was also a field training officer and a member of the marine patrol.
Harris served for 14 years as president of the Whatcom County Deputy Sheriff’s Guild. He also unsuccessfully ran for sheriff in 2011.
