NICK’S PICKS

Girls soccer: Bellevue at Sehome
7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, Sehome High School

Bellevue was one of the top 3A teams in the state last season while Sehome had a successful year in the 2A ranks. Bellevue, the one-seed at the 3A state tournament, was eliminated in the quarterfinals last season. The Mariners were 2A’s six-seed and eliminated in the first round.

Sehome lost over half of its roster last season, so it will be a question of who steps up against Bellevue. The Wolverines lost their starting goalie and leading scorer but return a couple of captains and all-league players.

This formidable test should help the Mariners prepare for league contests on the horizon.

2024 WWU Volleyball Invitational
All day, Sept. 5-7, Carver Gymnasium

Western opens the season ranked third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference preseason rankings, behind Central Washington and Seattle Pacific. The Vikings will host Central Washington, Sonoma State, MSU Denver and San Francisco State.

Western’s first game will be against Sonoma State on Thursday, Sept. 5. The Vikings will also play against MSU Denver Friday, Sept. 6, and against San Francisco State on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Vikings will rely on All-GNAC preseason selections Devyn Oestrich, Emily Vossenkuhl and Delaney Speer.

IFriYay Night Bags cornhole tourney
6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, Bellingham Sportsplex

Can you complain about free wings, affordable beer, pizza and playing cornhole for a cash prize? Upper Left Cornhole and Stemma Brewing will host a cornhole tournament for all ages and skills, using a format called Switcholio. There will be four rounds with a random partner then a double-elimination bracket. Check-in will be at 5:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13.
