Mount Baker Highway east of Glacier to close for winter preparations

Highway will close daily from Sept. 30–Oct. 3

Mount Baker Highway will close for seasonal maintenance and winter preparations starting 7 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30 near milepost 39 in the Six Mile Chain Up area.

Washington State Department of Transportation crews will be clearing catch basins and ditches, removing hazardous or dead trees, making guard rail repairs and sweeping shoulders, according to a Wednesday, Sept. 25 news release.

Closure details

Crews will close the highway from mileposts 39–54 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, starting Sept. 30 and ending Thursday, Oct. 3.

People who travel beyond the closure points during closure hours are allowed to do so at their own risk, according to the release. Travelers must be beyond milepost 54 before 7 a.m. each day and will not be allowed back through until after 4 p.m.

The road from Heather Meadows to Artist Point on Mount Baker Highway closes for the season in the late fall or early winter. Timing of the closure is dependent on the season’s first significant snowfall
