Nicole Race Mertens was born on February 3, 1978, in Bellingham to Dave and Beverly Race. On July 6, 2024, she passed away, unexpectedly but peacefully at her home in Southlake, Texas.

She graduated from Bellingham High School in 1996, and in 2000 from Carroll College in Helena, Montana. While there, she met a circle of lifelong friends, adding to those in Bellingham.

Nicole began her teaching career near Boise, ID, where she met the love of her life, Mark Mertens. They married in 2003, and moved to Southlake, Texas. Nicole taught for 21 years as a Math and Science teacher in fourth grade, and more recently, as the Art teacher for all grades at Old Union Elementary School. Jon Fike, her principal, wrote to his faculty:

“Nicole’s laughter was contagious, bringing joy to everyone.  Her smile and positive energy was a source of comfort and happiness for students and colleagues. She was not only a dedicated and inspiring teacher but also a devoted wife to Mark, a loving mother to Brinley and Collin, and a cherished friend to many. She had a passion for education and unwavering commitment to her students. Her unique ability to inspire and nurture made a lasting impact on countless young lives.”

Nicole and her family returned to Bellingham every summer to visit family and friends.  They celebrated many special times at Race Lagoon on Whidbey Island. Key West was another special place they visited. These are treasured memories.

As an organizer and entrepreneur, Nicole created a successful online venture and shared this hobby with Brinley. She also enjoyed and supported Collin’s GC Divers Club practices, meets, and national competitions.

Nicole is survived by her husband Mark; children Brinley, and Collin; sister Megan McClellan (Chance), their children Ryder and Josie; her parents, Dave and Beverly Race; Mark’s parents, Pete and Sherry Mertens; Mark’s sister Kerry Rabe (Tim), and her son Will Thrift.

The Celebration of Life for Nicole took place on July 29, 2024 at the White Chapel Methodist Church, Southlake, Texas. Their beloved Southlake community has been extremely supportive and comforting to the Mertens family and the legacy of Nicole Mertens.

As her friend and colleague, Sheresa Lee, posted:

“Nicole loved with her whole heart, and she gifted friendship to so many effortlessly.”
