JESSE’S PICKS

Y La Bamba

8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18
Viking Union, 516 High St.

Y La Bamba are a band out of Portland who mix indie rock and folk with some traditional Latin influences, with lyrics in English and Spanish. Their most recent album, 2013’s superb “Lucha,” was recorded partly in Portland and partly in Mexico City. They’re performing on WWU’s campus, at the Viking Union MPR, on Tuesday, Feb. 18. Great to see some more big concerts happening on campus!

‘The Pigeon And The Dove’ — Reid Jamieson & Carolyn Victoria Mill

Feb. 22–23
FireHouse Arts and Events Center Arts and Events Center, 1314 Harris Ave.

Reid Jamieson and Carolyn Victoria Mill are a married couple of singer-songwriters from Vancouver who perform around here frequently. Their new project, “The Pigeon and the Dove,” is a “lo-fi folk opera” about the causes of homelessness. It’s not musical theatre, but it’s music presented in a theatrical context. The project is still developing, with plans for a recording and more extensive touring in the works. They’re coming to Bellingham for two shows at the FireHouse Arts and Events Center PAC, the evening of Saturday, Feb. 22 and the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 23.

Checker Bloom

9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22
Bar Two Eleven, 211 E. Chestnut St.

Until recently, I hadn’t set foot in the space now called Bar Two Eleven since it was the Nightlight. I caught a show there last month and that space just has an incredible amount of potential for live music. So far in their new incarnation, most of the bookings have been cover and tribute bands, but they’ve had a few shows with originals. Saturday, Feb. 22 has a three-band bill headlined by Checker Bloom, so if you haven’t been there in a while, that’s a great chance to check it out.

Tommy Stinson

7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23
Buxton’s, 1904 Commercial Ave., Anacortes

Tommy Stinson started playing bass for the Replacements when he was just a little kid. Since then he’s been both a bandleader (check out Bash & Pop) and a sideman for hire (most notably with Guns ‘n Roses). He’s also by all accounts an unusually nice guy. He’ll bring a lifetime of rock and roll songs and stories to a solo show at Buxton’s on Sunday the 23.
