Anacortes boys dominate to claim district swim title

Seahawks tally 300 points to second-place Sehome's 249

Anacortes boys swim racked up 300 points and the Seahawks easily cruised to the 1A/2A District 1 championship Feb. 14–15 at Fidalgo Pool.

Sehome finished second with 249 points and Squalicum came in third with 248. The top three times in each event earned automatic state berths. Whatcom County schools also earned 34 wildcard state berths despite not finishing top three in districts.

Squalicum’s Hayden Nelson, Finn Smith, Thomas Knudsen and Cooper Yarsley won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:48.86. Sehome’s Kai Arthur, Koen Mathey, Owen Reid and Jack Wrightson finished second, and Bellingham’s Marley Lotts, Parker Kiniry, Micah Flint and Tony Seholm placed third.

Anacortes’ Caleb O’Donnell won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.12 and Finn McFarland placed second. In the 200-yard individual medley, Yarsley won in 2:13.34, Mariners’ Liam Daheim finished second and Kiniry was third.

Flint won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.61 seconds, Arthur was second and Storm’s Michael Ciatti was third. In the diving event, Sehome’s Kaden Schmidt won with 299.1 points, Squalicum’s Nolan Witman placed second and Bellingham’s Myles Ludwig was third.

Citatti was second in the 100-yard butterfly and Anacortes’ Noah McFarland placed third. 

In the 100-yard freestyle, O’Donnell won in 50.22 seconds, Nelson placed second and Mathey placed third. Finn McFarland won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:57.14, Daheim was second and Yarsley was third.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, O’Donnell, Finn and Noah McFarland and Nate Smelley won in 1:37.01. Squalicum’s Finn Smith, Mac Hofstedt, Ciatti and Gus Mayer finished second, and Sehome’s Noah Hawkins, Mathey, Daheim and Jackson Rogers finished third.


Nelson won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.24, Noah McFarland finished second and Arthur was third. Mathey placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke while Knowles finished third.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, O’Donnell, Knowles and the McFarland brothers won in 3:31.35; Hofstedt, Ciatti, Yarsley and Nelson placed second; and Daheim, Wrightson, Rogers and Arthur finished third.

In the 3A swim meet at Snohomish Aquatic Center, the top four individuals or relay teams earned a state berth. Mount Vernon also finished eighth in the team standings with 140 points and Ferndale was 10th with 68.

Mount Vernon’s 200-yard freestyle relay team placed fourth out of 15 teams. Conor Gustafson, Alexander Listskiy, Micah McNeil and Eduardo Garduno Arvizu finished in 1:33.25.
