Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County and the City of Everson have been awarded $1 million that will fund below-ground infrastructure connecting Everson to Habitat for Humanity’s Mateo Meadows Community.
This funding comes from the state’s Connecting Housing to Infrastructure Program (CHIP). Habitat for Humanity will use the money for sewer, storm and water systems, as well as a storm vault and utility trench, the nonprofit said in a Monday, Feb. 17 news release.
The Mateo Meadows Community will be a mixed-use, mixed-income commercial and housing development on Lincoln Street near downtown Everson. It will include 30 townhomes — two, three and four bedrooms — 14 apartments and 7,000 square feet of commercial space.
Construction on the first four units at Mateo Meadows began in the fall 2024, and the infrastructure projects are now underway thanks to the grant, according to the release.
“The award enables Habitat for Humanity to serve more of the poorest Whatcom County residents than originally contemplated, specifically those earning 30–50% (of) area median income,” said John Moon, the
executive director of Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County.
