CDN Game of the Week: Meridian at Nooksack Valley
When: 7:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13
Meridian record: 7-2
Nooksack Valley record: 6-3
Final prediction: Nooksack Valley 50-42
Meridian has been the most surprising girls basketball team this season. After finishing 7-17 last year, the Trojans (7-2) are sitting fourth in the Northwest Conference standings and have already matched their win total from last season. The Trojans also have one of the top defenses in the conference, allowing less than 40 points per game.
Defending 1A state champion Nooksack Valley has found its rhythm despite losing some of its top players from last season. The Pioneers are one of three teams undefeated against conference opponents. Nooksack Valley is also averaging over 47 points per game this season.
Meridian player to watch: Senior guard Brooklyn Fuller
Fuller is a 5-foot-3 point guard who has been the primary playmaker for the Trojans offense. She is third in Whatcom County in assists per game (3.4) and first in free throw percentage (87%). She has led Meridian to scoring over 45 points per game.
Nooksack Valley player to watch: Junior center Grace DeHoog
The 6-foot-2 center is averaging 16.1 points, 16.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game this season. DeHoog has been able to dominate in the paint with her leaping ability and strength for rebounds and blocks.
