Permanent speed limit reduction coming to I-5 Burlington

Speed will decrease from 70 mph to 60 mph, beginning Jan. 15

The speed limit on Interstate 5 between State Route 20 (milepost 230) and Cook Road (milepost 232) in Burlington is permanently changing from 70 mph to 60 mph, beginning Wednesday, Jan. 15.

Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews will close the left southbound lane of I-5 between State Route 20 and Cook Road from 8:30–10:30 a.m. on Jan. 15 to install the new speed limit signs.

Once the signs are up, the new speed reduction goes into effect on the 2.5-mile stretch of road.

The speed limit reduction is due to increased traffic flow, WSDOT said in a Jan. 10 news release. The reduction will now align this stretch of I-5 with the speed zone south of it through Burlington and Mount Vernon.
