Boys basketball forecast: Lyncs and Lions battle for top spot in conference

The Lyncs and Lions are destined for a close battle

By Nick Zeller-Singh Sports Reporter

CDN Game of the Week: Lynden Christian at Lynden

When: 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1

Lynden Christian record: 16-1

Lynden record: 17-0

Final prediction: Lynden Christian 70-65

Lynden Christian’s boys basketball is looking to end the Lions’ perfect season. The Lyncs remain the highest-scoring team in the conference, averaging nearly 80 points per game. The Lyncs’ defense has also improved in the last few weeks, allowing the fourth-lowest points per game in the Northwest Conference (53.1).

Three-time defending 2A state champ Lynden has the best defense in the conference, allowing less than 47 points per game. The Lions are vying for their first undefeated record and fourth consecutive state title. However, the Lions have been tested recently, squeaking past Blaine and Meridian in close battles.

Lynden Christian player to watch: Senior forward Luke VanKooten

VanKooten is a 6-foot-5 forward who has been one of the top rebounders for the Lyncs this season. He ranks third in 3-point percentage at 41.3%. He must shoot well and defend Lynden’s post players for a chance to defeat the Lions.

Lynden player to watch: Senior forward Brant Heppner

Heppner is top five in blocks (1.2) per game, points (22.1), 3-point percentage (42.9%) and free throw percentage (86.8%) in Whatcom County. Heppner must have a strong outing to match the Lyncs’ high-powered offense.

CDN/WECU Game of the Week will return for the Sedro-Woolley at Burlington-Edison Jan. 31 game.
