JESSE’S PICKS

Forest Stoke

March 19 and 20
Locations vary, Skagit County

Forest Stoke is the new solo project from Zach Hamer of the band Kuinka. It’s more on the folk/blues/country side of things, but still brings some of the quirky energy of his well-loved band, so fans of theirs might want to check it out. He’s got two Skagit County shows this week, Wednesday night (March 19) at the Rockfish Grill and Thursday (March 20) at Farmstrong Brewing.

High on Fire

9 p.m. Friday, March 21
Wild Buffalo, 208 W. Holly St.

After 25-plus years as leading lights in the stoner/sludge metal scene, including nine albums and a Grammy, Bay Area trio High on Fire keep on traveling the world, bringing their intense riffs for your headbanging enjoyment. They’re at the Wild Buffalo on Friday, March 21, with excellent local support from Melancholia and Venenosum

Whalien, Jay Si Proof

9 p.m. Saturday, March 22
The Shakedown, 1212 N. State St.

You could say Bellingham venues are playing against type this week with their bookings: The big metal show is at the Wild Buffalo, while the big funk and jam band show is at The Shakedown. Saturday, March 22 at The Shakedown features high-energy Seattle/Bellingham jammers Whalien plus up-and-coming Portland funkateers Jay Si Proof. Come ready to boogie.

Bellingham Symphony Orchestra: ‘Making Waves’

3 p.m. Sunday, March 23
Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Commercial St.

I probably don’t mention classical music in the column as much as I should, so let me start to make up for that by pointing out that the Bellingham Symphony has a pretty cool concert coming up Sunday afternoon, March 23 at the Mount Baker Theatre. As usual, they’ve done a nice job combining familiar works with more adventurous choices. The program for this one includes a Mozart piano concerto, Debussy’s La Mer, John Williams’ theme from Jaws, and a “concerto for birds and orchestra” by Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. Pianist and WWU professor of music Milica Jelaca Jovanovic joins them as the guest soloist. (No word yet on which birds will be performing.)
