Josie Hendricks breaks school pole vault record as LC girls win Bedlington Invite

Meridian captures boys title, Lynden's Kiki York wins four events

LYNDEN — Lynden Christian senior Josie Hendricks broke the school record in the girls pole vault and the Lyncs cruised to the team title while hosting the nine-team Bedlington Invitational track and field meet Friday, March 28 at Lynden Christian High.

The Lynden Christian girls team won with 169 points, Lynden had 153 and Oak Harbor was third with 87. Meridian won the boys title with 133.5 points, while Burlington-Edison followed with 114.5 and Lynden came in third with 113.

The hometown crowd roared in the bleachers when Hendricks broke the school record in the girls pole vault with a leap of 10 feet, 9 inches. Nooksack Valley’s Kate Shintaffer placed second and Meridian’s Natalie Larson was third. In the boys pole vault, Meridian’s Brandon Montgomery won with 13 feet, 6 inches, while Lynden’s Peter Tamminga and Blaise Lovegren finished second and third.

100-meter dash: Lynden’s Luka Lalji won the boys race in 11.49 seconds, Blaine’s Beckum Bleazard finished second and Oak Harbor’s Carson Lang was third. In the girls event, Lynden’s Kiki York won in 13 seconds, Oak Harbor’s Jenesis Lowery was second and Lynden Christian’s Kaelyn Hinton was third.

400-meter dash: Burlington-Edison’s Spencer Betz won the boys event in 51.89, Mount Baker’s Brice Cooper placed second and Lynden’s Henry Todd came in third. Lynden Christian’s Etta DeJong won the girls event in 1:03.12 and her teammate Avery Langstraat placed second, while Mount Baker’s Jane Lentz was third.

1600-meter run: Meridian’s Reuben TeVelde won the boys race in 4:21.79 and River Durban finished second while Burlington-Edison’s Landon Stallings placed third. In the girls event, Ferndale’s Katie Manly won in 5:35.95, Lynden Christian’s Laila Mellema finished second and Lynden’s Lucy Penner was third.

Girls 3200-meter run: Trojans’ Logan Ignacio dominated in 11:53.84, Allie Gordley was second and Mountaineers’ Hazel Grout was third.

Boys 3200-meter run: Stallings won in 10:25.09, Tigers’ Colton Sanger was second and Mount Baker’s Cameron Scott was third.

Boys 110-meter hurdles: Blaine’s Josiah Weeda won in 16 seconds, Meridian’s Trigg McConnell placed second and Lynden’s Asher Samms was third. In the boys 300 hurdles, Tigers’ Jensen King won in 42.65 seconds, Weeda placed second and Meridian’s Tate Hanson finished third.

Girls 100-meter hurdles: Lyncs’ Avery VanWeerdhuizen won in 16.65 seconds, Tigers’ Sydney Briggs was second and Lions’ Reta Vandermey placed third. In the 300 hurdles, Lynden’s Faith VanBrocklin won in 48.75 seconds, Vandermey finished second and VanWeerdhuizen came in third.

Boys 4×100-meter relay: Oak Harbor won the event in 44.67 seconds. Burlington-Edison’s Hamza Abdalle-McDermott, Wyatt Brown, Spencer Betz and Brayden Crows finished second and Blaine’s Colby Shipp, Jaiden Paez, Bleazard and Dylan Johnson were third.

Girls 4×100-meter relay: Lynden’s Vandermey, York, Elizabeth Leland and Mia Engledow won in 51.25 seconds; Lyncs’ Sadie Muljat, VanWeerdhuizen, Langstraat and Ellie Pierce placed second and Tigers’ Keziah Brown, Madeline Squibb, Anyka Vanderpol and Malia Anione finished third.

Boys 4×400-meter relay: Lynden’s Todd, Jack Lovegren, James Ellis and Blaise Lovegren won in 3:38.63; Mount Baker placed second and Blaine’s Raymond Ben, Shipp, Weeda and Tucker Greene were third. 

Girls 4×400-meter relay: Lynden’s Olivia Holmes, Wren Dickson, Sloan Dickson and VanBrocklin won in 4:18.95; Mount Baker’s Ellie Hanstead, Megan Little, Tyla Olson and Jane Lentz placed second and Lynden Christian’s Langstraat, VanWeerdhuizen, DeJong and Laila Mellema were third.

Girls 4×200-meter relay: Lynden’s Noelle Oudman, Leland, VanBrocklin and York won in 1:50.14; Lynden Christian’s Hendricks, Sydney Terpstra, Muljat and DeJong placed second and Oak Harbor finished third.

800-meter run: TeVelde won in 1:59.49, Durben placed second and Mount Baker’s Palmer Detta finished third. In the girls event, Lions’ Sloan Dickson won in 2:17.76, Ignacio was second and Lions; Wren Dickson placed third. 

200-meter dash: Lalji won the boys race in 23.36 seconds, Lang was second and Dylan Johnson came in third. In the girls race, York won in 26.95 seconds, winning four events during the day. Lowery followed York and Hendricks came in third.

Shot put: Meridian’s Rhett Duersch won the boys shot put with 53 feet, 5 inches, while Nooksack Valley’s Brady Ackerman and Colton Lentz were second and third. In the girls shot, Lynden Christian’s Jessa Wynstra won in 34 feet, 0.5 inches, Lynden’s Saraya Joshua was second and Oak Harbor’s Madelynne Brooks came in third.

Discus: Duersch also won the boys discus with 145 feet, 5 inches. Oak Harbor’s Cohen Esvelt finished second and Meridian’s Peyton Bender finished third. Brooks won the girls discus with 109 feet, 8 inches, while Lync’s Ellie Vanloo and Wynstra placed second and third.

Javelin: Meridian’s Blake Johnson threw for 169 feet, 1 inch to win the boys event. Ferndale’s Marcus Perez followed in second and Lentz was third. On the girls side, Oak Harbor’s Lilly Grubbs won with 121’ 2”, Shintaffer finished second and Ferndale’s Amelie McKeon was third.

Long jump: Lynden’s Conrad Timmer won the boys jump with 20 feet, 6.5 inches, Betz placed second and Meridian’s Caleb Young was third. On the girls side, Briggs won with 15 feet, 19.75 inches, Muljat went second and Hinton came in third.

High jump: Nooksack Valley’s Blue Hankins and Mount Baker’s Cole Lukes tied for first in the boys high jump with 6 feet even, while Lyncs’ Dawson Hintz was third. Blaine’s Teia Dube won the girls event with 5 feet, 2 inches, Ferndale’s Emerson Varga placed second and Leland was third.

Triple jump: Meridian’s Payton Kaschke won the boys triple jump with 38 feet, 7 inches, King was second and Crow was third. Hinton won the girls event with 34 feet, 6 inches, Ferndale’s Lillian Brunson placed second and Meridian’s Amelia Koning was third.
