JESSE’S PICKS
Francesco Crosara
6:30–8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9
FireHouse Arts and Events Center, 1314 Harris Ave.
Francesco Crosara is an Italian-born jazz pianist and composer who, after travelling and living all over the world, has now settled in Poulsbo. This is great news for PNW jazz fans, since he’s a phenomenal player and writes interesting pieces with a strong Latin influence. He’s bringing a quartet featuring the drummer D’vonne Lewis to the FireHouse Arts and Events Center on Wednesday, April 9.
Joe Pug
8 p.m. Thursday, April 10
Wild Buffalo, 208 W. Holly St.
Joe Pug takes the standard Dylan-esque, guy-with-guitar formula and brings an interesting twist to the lyrics, with counterbalancing doses of humor and cynicism, some serious literary chops, and a dash of soul. Based out of Austin, he’s doing a short run of northwest shows and stopping by the Wild Buffalo on Thursday, April 10.
Battle of the Bands
7:30 p.m., April 11–12
Lincoln Theatre, 712 S. 1st St., Mount Vernon
When I really think about it, I don’t believe much in setting musicians in competition with one another. But there’s something about the phrase “Battle of the Bands” that I just love. Maybe it just makes me feel like I’m in an ‘80s movie, rooting for the underdogs. Anyway, the Lincoln Theatre is hosting a two-night battle of the bands on Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12. The lineup wasn’t out yet as of my deadline but on some level, does it matter? Go, pick someone to cheer for, maybe you’ll find your new favorite band. Or maybe there will be a band of snotty, cartoonishly evil rich kids you can jeer. That would be fun, too.
Written in Sand
8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12
The Shakedown, 1212 N. State St.
Written in Sand are a local bunch of rockers who are putting out a new album. “Black and Blue” takes their raw, Americana-infused originals and adds some nice flourishes, with harmonies and unexpected instrumentation. Their album release show at The Shakedown on Saturday, April 12 also features Fern Spores, Throw No Stereo and Leo Moon.
