Whatcom jail visitation closed indefinitely due to aging building

Broken elevators lead to closure, offender relocation

Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday the indefinite suspension of all visitation at the downtown Bellingham jail. The agency cited “aging and outdated components” that led to failure of jail elevators.

After three months of attempting to fix the elevators, jail management has decided to implement alternative options to maintain a safe environment.

One option jail staff is considering is to relocate some offenders to the Work Center.

Whatcom County officials recently had a meeting to discuss asking voters for funding for a new jail.

At the Jan. 20 meeting Sheriff Bill Elfo said he has been dealing with a substandard jail since he took office in 2004.
