CONNOR’S PICKS

Volleyball: Burlington-Edison at Meridian
7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, Meridian High School

A battle between the only two undefeated teams (as of Thursday, Sept. 21) in the Northwest Conference commences Monday. Unbeaten or not, these are two of the best teams in the league and have been for years.

Meridian (6-0) is led offensively by senior outside hitter Emry Claeys who has recorded at least 15 kills in each game the Trojans have played. Burlington-Edison (6-0) will have its hands full trying to slow Claeys down.

The Trojans finished last season 13-7, missing the 1A state tournament for the first time since 2018. They finished third in the state in 2021–22 with a 19-3 record, while Burlington-Edison went on to finish fourth that season in Class 2A with a 19-5 overall record.

Unlike Meridian, Burlington-Edison made another run to state last season, finishing third with a 19-3 record. These two premier programs always make for an entertaining match.

WWU: Men’s soccer vs. Saint Martin’s
7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, Harrington Field

Western Washington University men’s soccer will open its Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule with a home match versus Saint Martin’s — two programs that are off to solid starts this 2023–24 season.

Western (3-2-1) has won back-to-back matches by a combined score of 5-0, first defeating the Colorado School of Mines on Thursday, Sept. 14 before knocking off Regis University two days later.

The Vikings will have 11 days between that win over Regis and the league opener versus Saint Martin’s, so they should be well rested.

Western sophomore forward Albin Jonsson currently leads the team with five goals on 16 shots, and he was named the men’s soccer GNAC Athlete of the Week on Monday, Sept. 18.

Recreation: Pub Run to Aslan Depot
6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, BBAY Running

BBAY Running in downtown Bellingham regularly puts on these pub runs, so if you enjoy a group jog that ends with a brew in hand, this might be for you.

This run will be a “nice out-and-back south of town,” with a mix of urban and trail running, beginning at BBAY Running’s location at 1431 N. State St. There are 3- and 4.2-mile routes, depending on your pace, which will take runners through the Salmon Woods Nature Area and Whatcom Creek Trail.

Come for the run, stay for the beer.
