CONNOR’S PICKS

Volleyball: Sehome at Ferndale
7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, Ferndale High School

This match will be Sehome and Ferndale’s last chance to iron out the final Northwest Conference hierarchy before the postseason begins on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Sehome (9-2, 9-2 NWC) would need a meltdown from both Lynden (12-1, 11-0 NWC) and Burlington-Edison (13-0, 11-0 NWC) to still have a shot at the league title, but it’s not completely out of the question.

At this point, Ferndale (7-5, 7-4 NWC) is just looking to improve its playoff positioning, and it will have a chance to do so in the season’s final match. This is the last, best match remaining on the schedule in the regular season’s final week.

Any win the Golden Eagles can earn now will help their 3A District 1 Tournament seeding, whereas Sehome is essentially solidified as the third or fourth seed in the 2A District 1 bracket.

WWU: Women’s soccer vs. Western Oregon
7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, Harrington Field

Any Western Washington University women’s soccer game with playoff implications is worth attending.

Second-place Western (7-3-3, 5-1-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) will host third-place Western Oregon (7-2-3, 4-2-2 GNAC) in a pivotal, late-season match in Bellingham.

As of Monday, Oct. 16, the Vikings have won four in a row, outscoring opponents 8-3 during that stretch. Western sophomore Morgan Manalili and freshman Mie Cairns are tied for the team lead with three goals each, while Manalili is also tied for second in assists with two.

This game will be a primer for when Western faces first-place Seattle Pacific (9-2-2, 6-0-2 GNAC) on Thursday, Nov. 2.

Recreation: SUP Sea Monsters
1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, Community Boating Center

“SUP” isn’t the most recognizable acronym, so allow me to make this more exciting for you: Stand-up Paddleboard Sea Monsters is the event’s full name.

Yes, for three hours, people in Halloween costumes will be out on the water near Taylor Dock attempting to stand-up paddleboard while wearing wacky outfits.

Other marine craft are also welcome, such as kayaks or rowboats, but we all know the paddleboarders will offer the most entertainment here.

Participation is just $5 if you bring your own boat, and $15 if you require a rental. All ages and abilities are welcome, and warm refreshments are offered following the paddle.

The colorful front of Community Boating Center has rows of paddleboards stacked on the side of the blue building.
The Community Boating Center will offer rentals of various kayaks and paddleboards to participants at the SUP Sea Monsters event for a price of $15, which includes participation in the paddle. (Noah Harper/Cascadia Daily News)
