Western Washington University volleyball finished its season by hitting a new, unfavorable milestone.
The Vikings men’s and women’s basketball teams were on the road, and they are the only two active programs for the university as December nears.

Here’s an overview of what else you may have missed from the last week in fall sports.
WWU
Volleyball
For the first time since 2011, Western volleyball did not reach the postseason. Worse yet, the team finished with a losing record for the first time since going 10-13 in 1999.
Western had a difficult start to the year, losing its first nine matches in non-league play before going 12-6 in GNAC matches. This year’s team had just one senior, Kylie Honrud, after graduating nine at the end of last season.
The Vikings’ final match of the season was a 3-0 home loss (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) to No. 20 nationally ranked Central Washington on Saturday, Nov. 18.
Sophomore standout Devyn Oestreich, who was named a unanimous All-GNAC First Team selection on Tuesday, Nov. 21, finished that game with 10 kills and 11 digs.
Redshirt freshman Delaney Speer tallied six kills and 14 digs, while sophomore Adele Holland and redshirt freshman Caroline Hansen added 14 assists each.
Men’s basketball
Western men’s basketball (5-3) split its pair of games last week, both in Seattle at the 2023 GNAC/PacWest Challenge hosted by Seattle Pacific University.
The Vikings began the two-game slate with a 92-86 loss to Concordia University Irvine on Friday, Nov. 17. They then played Azusa Pacific University on Saturday, Nov. 18, defeating the Cougars 100-90.
Five Western players scored in double figures in the latter contest, led by senior forward Jonathan Ned, who scored a game-high 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Ned added three rebounds, two assists and four steals.
Junior guards Will Wilson and Kai Johnson each scored 19 points and combined to pull down 12 rebounds. Johnson also had two steals. Redshirt freshman guard Tijan Saine notched 16 points and six assists, and sophomore forward BJ Kolly finished with 13 points.
Western’s next game will be a home contest versus Douglas College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25.
Women’s basketball
The Vikings (3-1) played two nationally ranked teams last week — both on the road — and defeated one.
Western fell to No. 22 Cal State San Marcos, 73-68, on Friday, Nov. 17, before beating No. 12 Azusa Pacific, 62-46, at the two-game 2023 Cougar Shootout in Azusa, California.
The second game was a dominant win for Western, led offensively by sophomore guard Mason Oberg’s 18 points. Senior forward Brooke Walling tallied 10 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Olivia Wikstrom also finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Western returns home for another two-game slate at the Lynda Goodrich Classic Nov 24–25. It will face MSU Moorhead at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, and then Hawaii Pacific at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25.
