La Conner School District is asking voters to approve a replacement programs and operations levy in the Feb. 11 special election.
At a tax rate of $1.11 per $1,000 in assessed value (the same as the current rate), the revenue will pay for additional staffing, safety, athletics, arts, technology and special education, among other priorities. The new tax would replace an existing levy that expires at the end of 2025.
The levy will allow the district to collect around $4.75 million in local tax revenue from 2026 to 2029, to supplement existing state and federal funding. Levy funding makes up 8% of the school district’s budget, according to the district’s website.
Like with all levies, if property values in the district increase, the tax rate will be adjusted to make sure the district only collects the amount that’s already been approved by voters. If passed, an owner of a $500,000 home should expect to pay about $555 a year.
Superintendent David Cram will present to the school board on the levy at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27.
This is the only measure on the February ballot in Skagit County. Whatcom County has no election next month.
