CONNOR’S PICKS
Boys soccer: Sehome at Squalicum
7 p.m., Monday, April 22, Squalicum High School
Bellingham’s trio of soccer teams are, once again, the best teams in the Northwest Conference.
This match in particular has huge league title implications, as both Sehome (11-0-0, 7-0-0 NWC) and Squalicum (8-3-0, 6-0-0 NWC) are yet to log a loss or tie in NWC play. Sehome has won 12 straight going back to last season, and the Mariners recently shut out rival Bellingham.
Squalicum’s only losses are to Sehome (non-league play in third game of the season), Class 4A Lake Stevens and 3A Mount Vernon. The Storm have been outscored 9-6 in those losses — falling by just one goal in each.
If this match ends in a tie, the league title will remain wide open. But if one team wins, it could propel them to a championship.
WWU: Men’s and women’s golf at GNAC Championships
All day, April 22–23, Coeur d’Alene Resort (Idaho)
Last season, Western Washington University’s golf teams turned in vastly different performances at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships.
The men’s team was in first place after day two, finishing second out of five teams after a team playoff with Simon Fraser University. Western’s women’s team finished fourth overall. Both of Western’s golf teams last won a GNAC title in 2022.
This season, both programs are ranked second in the GNAC standings. Junior Seth King is the highest-ranked Vikings golfer ahead of the first postseason tournament, as he is currently fourth among GNAC men’s golfers with a 73.3 average this season.
Fellow junior Ryan Ho is sixth in the conference (73.5), while sophomore Peter Dionne-Yahr is tied for seventh (73.6).
On the women’s side, sophomore Emma Worgum leads Western with her 76.5 average and sixth-place ranking. Sophomore Lauren Lee is tied for ninth (78).
WWU/Recreation: Men’s and women’s track and field at Ralph Vernacchia Invitational
All day, Saturday, April 27, Civic Stadium
This is the only open home meet for Western track and field all season, making it a special annual occasion locally.
Club athletes are welcome at the event for those who want to compete against the best the GNAC has to offer. Last year, double-digit collegiate teams were present as well as eight clubs.
The Vikings will go straight from this meet to the GNAC Multi Championships April 29–30, also hosted at Civic Stadium. However, that’s a closed collegiate-only meet.
